The Scarecrow and His Servant
adapted by Simon Reade
Music & Lyrics by Chris Larner
December 10th 2008 - January 10th 2009
Running time: 120 min. (incl. interval)
"Here you are, an honest and willing youth, and here am I, a Scarecrow of enterprise and talent. What would you say if I offered you the position of my personal servant?" - "What would my duties be?" - "To accompany me throughout the world, to fetch and carry, to wash, cook, and attend to my needs. In return, I have nothing to offer but excitement and glory. (We might sometimes go hungry, but we shall never want for adventure. Well, my boy?) What do you say?"
Philip Pullman's brilliant modern classic is a zany, song-filled journey full of suprises.
While a small boy, Jack, shelters from a thunderstorm, a flash of lightning strikes a pea-brained, turnip-headed Scarecrow - and he comes to life!
Together they head off in pursuit of happiness, dodging bandits, surviving ship-wrecks and flapping about with a flock of birds. When the river-polluting Buffaloni tyrants catch up with them for the final show-down, who will save the day?
Philip Pullman is the master story-teller of such massive popular tales as the trilogy His Dark Materials, The Ruby in the Smoke and The Firework-Maker's Daughter. Simon Reade's previous adaptations include Philip Pullman's Aladdin and the Enchanted Lamp, Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful, and Lewis Caroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland which won the TMA Award for Best Show for Children and Young People.
Join the Scarecrow and his servant, Jack, on their comic mis-adventures this Christmas in a unique and unforgettable tale for all the family aged seven and up.

It is refreshing to see an adaptation of this kind that doesn’t keep falling back on the storytelling ethos and putting chunks of narrative in its cast’s mouths, but is determined to show rather than tell.
