Write to Play...

An Evening with Dennis Kelly

November 14th 2010

Show starts: 8pm
Running time: TBC

In The Same Boat presents Write to Play... with Dennis Kelly. Listen to Dennis in conversation with Matthew Dunster about his life, career and work; hear a reading from one of his plays; and join us in discussion with Dennis about his themes, styles and methods of writing.

Dennis Kelly’s work has featured assault, abuse, infanticide and torture. His plays frequently celebrate the contradictory nature of the human psyche in a uniquely spare and truthful style. Fast becoming one of our greatest contemporary playwrights Kelly’s writing is tense, raw and exciting, with the emphasis always on emotion before intellect. Plays include: After the End (Traverse Theatre/ Bush/ Paines Plough, 2005); Love and Money (Manchester Royal Exchange/ Young Vic, 2006); Orphans (Traverse Theatre/ Birmingham Rep/ Paines Plough, 2009); The Gods Weep (Hampstead Theatre, 2010)

‘We can think that someone is the best person in the world and two weeks later realise we always hated their guts.’ (Dennis Kelly interviewed on Orphans)

Matthew is a director, playwright and actor. Directing includes The Front Line (Shakespeare’s Globe), Testing the Echo (Out of Joint), The Member of the Wedding, Some Voices (Young Vic Theatre), Love and Mone (Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester), Cruising (Bush Theatre) and Port Authority (Liverpool Everyman Theatre). Writing for theatre includes You Used To, Tell Me, The Glazier, Two Clouds Over Eden, The Band and You Can See The Hills. Writing for radio includes Depth of Field and Poor Echo. Directing for radio includes Love and Money. Matthew is currently an Associate Director of the Young Vic Theatre.

Write to Play... events focus on a contemporary playwright, changing venues each time and strive to give audiences the opportunity to engage with playwrights.
