In 2006 planning was given on a mixed use development which would include a new theatre for Southwark Playhouse as part of a section 106 planning obligation. The new theatre will house a 250+ seat, flexible theatre space and a dedicated youth and community space. A long lease of 125 years was offered at anb affordable rent.
15 years later, after many twists and turns, the new theatre will finally be realised. The new theatre will be the base of our operations and a permanent, long term home. It represents the first phase of a longer term plan that will eventualy offer us much needed capacity and the opportunity to present and develop more work. It will also inevitably increase our earned income and we intend to use that income to provide meaningful support to new and emerging theatre companies and to provide exclusive space for our youth and community programme.
