Southwark Playhouse London Bridge
Southwark Playhouse are finally returning to London Bridge. But not – as previously planned – back to their previous home within the arches of London Bridge Station. Instead, they will be moving to a purpose built theatre as part of a major office development on the site of Colechurch House, located at the foot of London Bridge.
Replacing our current temporary home on Newington Causeway, the new theatre, designed by Foster + Partners, wil provide a well-proportioned, net-zero carbon cultural facility arranged over three floors. It will include two theatre spaces of 150 and 250 seats respectively, a workshop space, a cafe/bar plus associated front and back of house space. The developer CIT have agreed to fit out the theatre, and they have offered us a long lease on affordable and sustainable terms.
It’s a fantastic opportunity, but… the deal can only go ahead if the development gets planning permission.

The proposed new venue will be a fantastic opportunity to carve out much needed cultural space in the North of Southwark, right in the heart of London. It will serve as a resource for showcasing the best up and coming theatre talent as well as a hub for the local community to participate in the arts. For Southwark Playhouse it will create much needed capacity, critical to ensuring the future of our organisation.
