April 2020 - What are we up to?
We might be in lockdown, but our participatory groups (the Young Company, Elders Company and People’s Company) have adapted to the new circumstances and gone online! Whether undertaking creative challenges, supporting and sharing experiences together or continuing to develop the productions we were working on before the theatre closed, we’ve been keeping busy. Keep an eye on our social media platforms, as we’ll be sharing what we get up to on there in the weeks ahead.
Importantly, we’re also looking ahead to the future, and we thought we’d share with you what you’ve got to look forward to from us when we’re back (even if we’re not quite sure yet when that will be…):
• Our 14 – 18 Young Company will be performing I Am Down Here, a brand new play written by award-winning writer Tyrell Williams in collaboration with the cast, that explores the existence of living through the mundane whilst in search of the epic.
• Our 19 – 25 Young Company will be performing a brand new version of Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna, adapted by Daniel Goldman. A timely and relevant play, this will be a bold and challenging production exploring power, privilege and community.
• The People’s Company will be presenting a brand new piece exploring the history and stories of the area around Southwark Playhouse, to celebrate the opening of our brand new theatre this year.
• The Elders Company will present six brand new short plays written especially for them by Abraham Adeyemi, Sophie Ellerby, Isley Lynn, James Rushbrooke, Stewart Melton and Georgia Green. Each unique and exciting, these will challenge both actor and audience, spanning everywhere from the dining table to a spaceship in the far future.
We are so excited to bring you these productions, and hope to see you there!
