  • Alongside the Starbucks and organic food stores popping up in Uptown Chicago, Arthur Przybyszewski runs the small donut shop set up by his Polish immigrant father. Neglected by its owner and damaged by local vandals, Superior Donuts survives on a diverse group of loyal local customers. But when he employs excitable romantic Franco, Arthur is forced to confront the modern reality of the American Dream.

A darkly comic and provocative drama, this stunning new play from Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning American playwright Tracy Letts brings to life the eclectic characters and changing face of a busy Chicago neighbourhood.

The UK premiere of Superior Donuts is presented at Southwark Playhouse by The Trick (formerly Greenhouse Theatre) the company behind the critically acclaimed smash-hit West End revival of Philip Ridley’s Mercury Fur.

Tracy Letts’ previous work includes the multi award-winning August: Osage County (National Theatre/Broadway) now a film starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, Pulitzer Prize finalist Man from Nebraska, Bug (Gate Theatre) and Killer Joe (Bush Theatre/West End). An acclaimed actor, he won a Tony for his performance in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Broadway) and currently stars as Senator Andrew Lockhart in hit TV series Homeland.

‘Ned Bennett’s beautifully judged UK premiere’ ★★★★ The Independent
‘an engaging drama about the American dream’ ★★★★ Daily Telegraph
‘Tracy Letts’ entertaining play…bristling with one-liners’ ★★★★ Financial Times

Please note that there will be no latecomers admitted and that the production contains swearing and occasional scenes of violence.

Superior Donuts is supported by the Mark Marvin…Peter Brook Rent Subsidy Award.
